Travelling Around Japan: What’s Our Vanlife Plan?

Travelling Around Japan: What’s Our Vanlife Plan?

And so the Japan van life really begins!
After months of van conversion, working 7 days a week, and a mini posting hiatus, we’re back to reveal some big van plans.

And that news ties in with the little sneaky community post we shared a month ago – we have officially become van dwellers/ van lifers and we are setting off to see all 47 prefectures of Japan in our van and we’re bringing you along for the ride! And so today we’re sharing our Japan vanlife travel plan, bucket list destinations, and how we plan to survive van life!

Okay, hold up. Let’s address the big elephant in the room. Yes, there is a pandemic going on, and no, we aren’t encouraging a huge upheaval of Tokyoites to far flung places around Japan, as hypocritical as that may seem. Have our attitudes changed towards the virus? No. We are aware of how terrifying and dangerous it is, which is why we want to do as much as we can to prevent ourselves becoming vectors and endangering the lives of others while travelling, but this is our new normal and a more responsible way to promote Japan life and travel, which has always been our goal. We sincerely hope that our journey and coming adventures will be informative and inspiring for your own adventures!

If you want to help cheer us on as we embark on our new life, one of the best ways you can help us is by liking and sharing our videos and of course sending us encouraging comments! ❤️

What we will be doing:
– travelling in our van and by bike around all 47 prefectures of Japan
– staying in the van at roadside stations and campgrounds (that are accepting guests, and respecting those that aren’t)
– visiting open-air locations and social distancing
– bringing hand sanitizer and hand soap with us everywhere. No acceptions.
– wearing masks everywhere
– checking our temperature daily
– keeping to our own personal van bubble
– using our van fridge and buying food with long shelf-life and cooking in the van as much as possible
– showing you more of what Japan has to offer beyond what is found in guidebooks

What we won’t be doing:
– travelling by public transport
– visiting crowded, confined places
– eating out every day (besides, our budget is too tight for normal dining!)
– meeting up with friends in different prefectures
– putting locals at risk just for content. If something feels unsafe to us or for others around us, we won’t be doing it. While we want to support local businesses, it may not always be possible and some businesses are temporarily closed to visitors anyway!

Hi! We’re Kiwi 🇬🇧 and Bear 🇯🇵, collectively known as OshareJapan. おしゃれ (o-sha-re) is a Japanese term for anything trendy, stylish or cool. Oshare Japan = cool Japan! We are an international married couple based in Tokyo, and we converted a secondhand van into a mini home to travel freely around Japan to show you what it has to offer.
